HTC Legend gallery: speak to me… ‘aluminium’

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 04:59 AM PDT

HTC Legend is a rather typical mid-range Android OS running smartphone except  for one shiny little detail: it’s uni-body design that is made from a slightly brushed aluminum. It encompasses most of the phone, except for the trademark chin, where the battery and SIM card access slot is hidden, and the area around  the 5 MPix camera. The edges around the 3.2 inch touchscreen are noticeably sharper to boost the impression of the quality materials used, that altogether makes the HTC Legend en eye catching smarpthone to have, albeit with certain compromises in technology department. In particular, I wasn’t impressed with signal reception quality (especially wi-fi) and the below average battery life. Nevertheless, for people simply looking for a solidly built fashion phone with a colorful screen and decent set of features, this is one of the fewer Android’s to consider!

Below you will find the highlights of this device from different angles using my not-so-professional photo taking skills and camera, but I sincerely hope you will enjoy this gallery as much as I did making it!

As you can see, the legibility in the sun remains the weakest part of the traditional AMOLED screens, that was also used in HTC Legend. Super LCD technology that was used in more recent HTC phones fare noticeably better in clear outdoor conditions, sacrificing the somewhat warmer colors of the AMOLED screens in the process. The 3.2 inch screen is compact enough to be easily reachable with a thumb.

Screentest with Nokia N900 (TFT, 65K colors)  and Samsung I8910HD (AMOLED, 16M colors)

The stylish metal grill hides the earpiece and LED notification light, while the ambient light and proximity sensors gather behind the glossy black plastic and are also barely visible.

The optical joystick or ‘trackball’ is handy when increased precision in required, and it also serves as the central confirmation key. It doesn’t shine like the trackball on the Nexus One, for example. The physical keys under screen are the biggest disappointment though, as their modest look and feel bring uncharacteristic cheapness to this otherwise well-rounded package.

The back of the camera houses the mono loudspeaker grill, on the right, while the camera sensor with a single LED flash takes the middle. The dots on the right side of the camera are purely cosmetic.

Micro USB port and microphone are visible at the bottom of the phone. Due to the ‘chin’, they all face slightly upwards.

The famed ‘chin’  from it’s predecessor, the HTC Hero, is still present but has been noticeably reduced. It’s not irritating at all, and you will appreciate having it the moment you start working with the device, especially when reaching for the hardware keys below the touchscreen.  The back of the ‘chin’ can be removed to allow access to SIM and microSD card slots, as well as the  battery.

I’ve had my doubts about the longevity of the cover, but if fitted properly, there are no visible gaps and the cover sits perfectly.

The phone turns off when it detects the ‘chin’ has been removed, so switching memory cards on the fly is a no go, sadly. The removal of the battery is altogether a truly unique experience thanks to the construction of this smartphone. Behind the ‘chin’, there’s an additional plastic piece holding the removable components in place. Simply lift it up, pull the red handle, and the battery is jettisoned out of it’s recess.

The top of the phone is also kept clean and true to the minimalistic formula of the phone. Unlike HTC Desire, the power/screen lock key and 3.5 mm headset jack are on the opposite side. Whereas in HTC you’d unlock the  device with your index finger (if held in right hand), in HTC Legend you do it with your thumb.

And as a little bonus, I’ve added a few camera samples where I pit HTC Legend against another 5 Mpix shooter, the Nokia N900. The images are clickable to their original sizes, enjoy!

Nokia Siemens Networks demonstrates LTE using BWA Spectrum in India

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 04:45 AM PDT

Nokia Siemens Networks today demonstrated  Time Division Duplex version of LTE  using the broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum in India. Gurdeep Singh, COO of Aircel made a video call using the test  environment at the R&D facility of  Nokia Siemens Networks in Bengaluru. The call was conducted with 4G mobile technology running on NSN commercial hardware.

The company showed a demo of HD video streaming and 3-way video conferencing.TD-LTE dongles from Samsung were used and a peak speed of 110 Mbps achieved .The demo used LTE equipment and software from Nokia Siemens Networks

"Today's demo reiterates our leadership and commitment to getting TD-LTE into new market. It also demonstrates our regional and global progress in this area," said Juha Lappalainen, head of mobile broadband sales at Nokia Siemens Networks. "Our TD-LTE trials across the globe prove our capability in driving rapid commercial TD-LTE network deployments aimed at facilitating a new wave of advanced mobile broadband services."

"This is an important milestone in building the TD-LTE ecosystem in India," added Urs Pennanen, head of India region, Nokia Siemens Networks. "TD-LTE over the Broadband Wireless Access spectrum is important for the country, as it will allow operators to offer voice and data to the masses. We are ready to collaborate with partners to accelerate our progress toward a comprehensive deployment of TD-LTE in India."

NSN is actively participating in tests and trials for both Frequency Division Duplex LTE (FD-LTE) and TD-LTE technologies and is  working with telecom operators and device manufacturers to strengthen the ecosystem.

Sony Ericsson introduce world’s first 16 Megapixel camera phone

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 01:45 AM PDT

Sony Ericsson is very good in making good smartphones and cellphones. Most of you people may know about the Sony Ericsson CyberShot series, and all phones in this series comes with good camera sensor. Sony Ericsson has launched the world first phone with 16.41 Megapixel camera, which is known as the Sony Ericsson CyberShot S006. Recently, Sony announced a 16.41 Megapixel camera sensor for mobile phones, and the first phone to come with it is their own SE CyberShot S006. Well, the high megapixels are not everything, the camera sensor should provide good light sensitivity and color to the image, and I trust Sony because they are very good in cameras. The phone has an ISO settings up to 12800. S006 comes with Sony Ericsson own OS (no Android which is kinda sad), 1GHz Snapdragon processor, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, the phone is only available in Japan through KDDi.

Geek Art: 5 Nokia N8s Inside Each Other

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 01:03 AM PDT

Question: What do you do when you have not one but two Nokia N8 review units at hand and a *lot* of free time?

Answer: Well, what any respectable geek would do, you play, you take pictures, and eventually you try to breed them, because you know that ultimately, you have to return both, but you *so* want to make your little N8ties to raise, love and keep when the parents are back with their legitimate owners.

And this is the result. Can you see the 5 Nokia N8s in this photo? (Click on the image to open the full 12MP resolution one). Oh it’s beautiful!

MAKING OF: Here are the 5 steps, in order, to make this one marvelous gem of a photo.

Level 1 – We start with a photo of the Dark Grey Nokia N8 (let’s call him dgN8) taken by the Silver N8 (sN8).

Level 2 – Then, we display this picture on the sN8, and we take a photo of that with the dgN8.

Level 3 – We display that one on the dgN8 and we shoot it with the sN8.

Level 4 – Again, we open that image on the sN8 and we take a photo with the dgN8.

Level 5 – And ultimately, with the sN8, we take a photo of the dgN8 displaying that last picture.

It’s poetic. It’s transcending. It’s… Oh well, it makes me ache to have the 5 colors of the N8 so I could put them all inside each other. If anyone has the 5 colors at hand, please do it :) Or if someone at Nokia wants to send me the 5 colors to do it, then I really don’t mind ;)

Note: I did try to go to the 6 and 7 N8s levels, but ultimately I was beaten by the resolution of the screen, you can’t go past the 5 N8s with the screen still being able to show them all. Too bad.

Gingerbread first screenshot and details leaked?

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 10:01 PM PDT

Android is currently one of the famous mobile operating systems, and it’s growing rapidly. The latest Android version is Android 2.2 and it’s also known as Froyo. It’s not a secret that Google is working on a new version of Android, which is known as Android 3.0 and it’s called Gingerbread. We heard that Google will be launching Gingerbread in Q4 2010, and we are already in Q4. Our friends over at Phandroid got their hands on a very blur screenshot, and they are claiming that it’s the first shot of the Gingerbread. It’s reported that Gingerbread is now coming in early 2011, and as we know that Google don’t want to miss anything, so take your time Google. Here are some highlights of the Gingerbread:

  • Video chat similar to Gtalk's desktop version
  • Redesigned icons
  • Slate/Grey notification bar (similar to the Galaxy S lineup)
  • Android Green color hints everywhere
  • Apps to feel built in to the OS rather than just add-ons
  • Youtube overhaul, could feature "Lean Back" support
  • Google Voice calls over wi-fi and data

So these are some new features we are going to see in Gingerbread. I am sure that there are more new features in Gingerbread. Folks, tell us what do you think about Gingerbread, are you planning to drop your iPhone or Blackberry for it, or you already did?

Are you desperate to call you friends and relatives or colleagues as soon as your plane touches down on the runway. Soon , you can use your mobile phone in India even before the aircraft comes to a halt.

Starting from October 22 most airlines will allow use of mobile phones after the aircraft has landed and exited the active runway.

Now get ready to put on those ear plugs even after the plane has landed !

But this would be a welcome move for passengers traveling to the Delhi airport where taxiing takes a helluva time !
