Twitter Subpoenaed by U.S. Government for Wikileaks Accounts

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:36 AM PST

The U.S. government has asked Twitter to hand over private messages sent to and from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and other WikiLeaks staffers.

In all likelihood, it’s also contacting other web services Assange may have used to get contact details and personal information about Assage’s activities and supporters.

According to a report just filed by The New York Times, Twitter has been subpoenaed by the U.S. government in connection to the ongoing WikiLeaks investigation.

Twitter, like most web companies, has a “spy guide,” documents peertaining to compliance with request from governments and law enforcement into criminal investigations. These requests are supposed to be accompanied by subpoenas or warrants.

According to Twitter’s specific guide [PDF], “In accordance with our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, non-public information about Twitter users is not released unless we have received a subpoena, court order or other legal process document.” Such requests would only be valid if sent by law enforcement.

In this particular case, every indication would point to the speedy release of Assange’s direct messages to the U.S. government.

A court order [PDF] was sent to Twitter by the Department of Justice on Decemer 14, 2010. Stating that information held by Twitter was “relevant and material” to the Wikileaks investigation, the district court ordered the startup to hand over:

  • session times and connection records
  • telephone numbers
  • credit card information
  • e-mail and IP addresses
  • correspondence and notes of record

The court ordered Twitter to surrender the above information for accounts belonging to Assange, Wikileaks, Pfc. Bradley Manning (widely suspected to be the original source responsible for transfering cables to Wikileaks), and several Wikileaks associates and volunteers, including Birgitta Jonsdottir, Rop Gongrijp, and San Francisco-based programmer Jacob Appelbaum.

Google and other web and social media services all have the same kinds of spy guide documents governing compliance; we’d be shocked if Twitter was the only company that got a WikiLeaks-related court order to surrender information. And we’re pretty sure other services have much more sensitive information on Assange et al.

We’ll continue to keep you updated as this story develops.

HTC Rolls Out New Line of Android 4G Smartphones at CES [PICS]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:50 PM PST

HTC has just announced a new line of 4G smartphones — the ThunderBolt will come out on Verizon, the Evo Shift on Sprint and the Inspire on AT&T.

With these new arrivals, HTC’s portfolio of 4G devices has grown to six total, including the original Evo, the G2 and the MyTouch.

We were lucky enough to grab side-by-side pics of all three devices at CES today.

The Evo Shift, HTC’s newest Sprint device, features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 5MP rear-facing camera and a low $149 price point that’s sure to attract would-be first-time smartphone buyers. The device has a relatively small, 3.6-inch display and no front-facing camera.

The HTC/Verizon ThunderBolt comes with deeply integrated Skype technology and is part of Verizon’s all-new 4G LTE connectivity plans. This device also features an 8MP camera and a 4.3-inch display.

The Inspire, which HTC is partnering with AT&T to bring to market, features a arge 4.3-inch screen, as well as some new advances in HTC’s Sense technology, including an online component that will allow users to locate lost phones or wipe a phone’s data from a website.

All three devices will ship with Android 2.2, a.k.a. Froyo; however, release dates for all phones aren’t yet available.

Take a look at the gallery below, and in the comments, let us know which model appeals to you most and why.

Ford Shows Off New Mobile App for Electric Car Owners

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:53 PM PST

At CES today, Ford’s Alan Hall showed us a sweet new mobile app the company created to complement its new electric sedan.

It’s pretty robust. It’ll allow users to check charge status and find charging stations, plan fuel-free trips and have remote control access to change the climate or unlock the doors, all while the user is away from the vehicle itself.

And of course, it just wouldn’t be a Ford launch if the thing didn’t tweet somehow. This app will let electric car owners share stats on their planet-saving habits to both Twitter and Facebook.

It seems like this app will spare its users a lot of the smaller pains of owning an electric car. Have a gander at the video above, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Photo-Mapping Startup Opens API for Location & Photo Features

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:54 PM PST

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.

SnaprName: Snapr

Quick Pitch: Mobile photo-sharing app Snapr plots uploaded photos on a map that other users can browse. Its new open API will allow other mobile photo app developers to add location-based features and real-time photo feeds to their own apps.

Genius Idea: Snapr brought a novel approach to photo sharing when it released its iPhone photo-sharing app last year. In addition to allowing users to easily share their iPhone photos to Twitter, the app uses geotags to plot the photos on a map. Users can browse photos taken in locations near them and make comments in other people’s photo streams. They can also search for users, locations and key words to see related photos on the map. The company was able to amass about 75,000 downloads and about 15,000 active users with the idea.

The problem is that swarms of other great photo-sharing apps are also taking off. 2010 saw the launch of popular apps Instagram, PicPlz, and Path. Dozens of other apps offer filters and other photo effects.

As the proverb goes, if you can’t beat them it’s best to join them, and that’s exactly the move that Snapr made when it opened an API this month that other photo apps can use to create a social component to their own apps.

“We’re pretty avid iPhonographers ourselves, and we find ourselves using a lot of different apps. Different effects and things — they come and go. So we think that people really want to use a range of apps, I don’t think it’s ever going to just be one app,” Co-founder Rowan Wernham explains. “[With Snapr's API] you can have one user account and connect it to your Facebook, Foursquare, Tumblr, all of those things, and then in a range of apps you can just sign in and never have to do that again.”

The API will allow other photo apps to add sharing capabilities, add photo streams similar to Instagram’s, or add location-based and mapping features. Photos shared across multiple apps using Snapr’s API will contribute to Snapr’s inventory, making their own app more robust.

But one has to wonder: Is anybody still using filter and photo effect apps that don’t already include sharing options? Apps like Hisptamatic, Picplz and Instagram have already attracted a good number of the “tweak and share” photo crowd, and Instagram and Picplz also include location-sharing options. The API could have more potential for niche location photo sharing — Wernham gives the example of a crowd-sourced street art location app. Snapr also plans to sell white-label solutions for branded apps.

If Snapr’s API does attract a significant number of developers, it will bode well for the next move the self-funded startup has planned. The next version of its own app will focus on finding friends and keeping track of what they’re up to via location-based photo feeds (it will be interesting to see if this new version can compete with Foursquare’s new photo-sharing feature) .

Tumblr Opens New Office in Richmond, Virginia [PICS]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:11 PM PST

You know what they say: Virginia is for bloggers.

Everyone’s favorite (re)blogging platform, Tumblr, is getting ready for a little Southern expansion. The company, which has its headquarters in New York City, is setting up a secondary shop in Richmond, Virginia.

“Why Richmond?” you might ask. As fate would have it, the company’s mobile app developers and community support team are already located in the area, so adding a Richmond office wasn’t such a stretch.

And we’re sure the startup’s recently announced $30 million round of funding didn’t hurt in making that decision, either. New funding and new office space might also mean new hires in the near future; we’ll keep an ear to the ground on that score.

Tumblr’s chosen the amusingly named Corrugated Box Building as its Virginia home. Located in the Old Manchester district, directly across the James River from downtown Richmond, the building is the type of open-floor-plan, renovated-warehouse communal environment so in vogue with startups these days. In fact, parts of the building are not unlike the buildings where Twitter and other San Francisco-based startups are now operating.

New York staffers, including company president John Maloney, will in in Richmond to help christen the new facilities with a Tumblr meetup and press event on Thursday, January 13.

Check out these images of the Corrugated Box Building offices, and let us know what you think in the comments.

50 Cent Touts His Own Brand of “Sleek” Headphones [PICS]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 07:39 PM PST

Hip hop star 50 Cent appeared at CES today, promoting his new Sleek by 50 Cent wireless headphones.

If their specs are any indication, they might give Dr. Dre and his Beats headphones and audio gear some serious competition.

Sleek by 50 Cent uses the Kleer lossless wireless technology for a cleaner sound than the usual Bluetooth wireless devices.

One feature we like: Four pairs of these headphones can listen to the same audio source at once. Their battery life is listed at 10 hours, but when you plug them in with conventional audio cable, they don’t require battery power at all, unlike the Dr. Dre Beats headphones.

We especially like those carbon fiber accents, certain to makes these babies even more expensive. But nobody from 50’s camp is talking price just yet.

The Sleek company says these ‘phones are the beginning of a series of audio products. Take a look at 50 Cent mingling with the CES throngs:

40% of All Tweets Come From Mobile

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 06:43 PM PST

At CES, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo revealed that 40% of all tweets come from mobile devices, demonstrating mobile’s increasing importance to the social media company.

On stage at the AllThingsD event at CES, Costolo bantered with Kara Swisher about why Twitter is at CES, its plans to become simpler and more consistent across platforms, and the impact of its celebrity users.

During the course of the conversation, Swisher asked Costolo which devices and operating systems are the most important to Twitter’s future and its health. Costolo responded by saying that 40% of all tweets are now composed on mobile devices, up from around 20% to 25% a year ago.

Twitter mobile usage exploded with the release of the company’s official iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry apps. The mobile web site, SMS, Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for BlackBerry are the most popular Twitter apps after the company’s website.

Costolo also revealed that Twitter now has 350 employees, 100 of whom were hired just recently in Q4 2010.

Stay tuned; we’ll have more from Costolo’s interview soon.

iPad 2 Hardware, Allegedly From Apple, Spotted at CES [REPORT]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 05:46 PM PST

Is this the back of the upcoming iPad 2? This piece of metal spotted yesterday at a CES booth sure looks like the back of an iPad, with new holes for speakers and a front-facing camera.

When we dropped by Chinese manufacturer GoPod Mobile’s booth today for confirmation and more photos, the “iPad 2″ was hidden underneath a stack of papers, and the purveyors wouldn’t let us take pictures of it.

Two of our reporters quizzed a person working at the GoPod booth; these staffers confirmed that this item was indeed the back of the next iPad, sent to GoPod Mobile by Apple itself.

We know, we know — this doesn’t make any sense. Apple rarely sends dummy prototypes to case makers or accessory manufacturers before a product release, and many of the cases claimed to be the real thing in the past have turned out to be not exactly accurate.

We’re approaching this “iPad 2″ with a healthy dose of skepticism. Commenters, what do you think? Could this be the real thing?

Microsoft’s Head of Internet Explorer on Privacy & Losing to Firefox

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 04:41 PM PST

Microsoft’s Dean Hachamovitch, the corporate vice president of Internet Explorer, discussed IE9, the browser market, privacy and more at the AllThingsD event at CES today.

Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal led off with the plummeting market share of Internet Explorer, specifically concerning reports that Firefox has overtaken IE in Europe. Hachamovitch sidestepped the issue by saying that Mirosoft is actually trying to drop the market share of IE6, IE7 and IE8 because it wants people to switch to a more dynamic web with IE9.

The majority of the discussion focused on user privacy, though. It was clear that Hachamovitch wanted to focus on the issue; he wore a shirt with the word “private” emblazoned on the front combined with the IE logo.

The first part of the conversation focused on tracking. Hachamovitch made sure to differentiate between two types of tracking: “expected tracking” and “creepy-stalking tracking.” Some tracking is good, he said, citing Pandora as an example. By tracking what songs you listen to, it can create recommendations and customized playlists, one of the big selling points of the streaming radio service. Microsoft wants to have that type of tracking while giving users the option to opt out of certain types of tracking.

Mossberg and Hachamovitch then dived into the ways Microsoft intends to protect user privacy in IE9. One of those features is a button users can click on almost any webpage that will block tracking and cookies from that website. In addition, companies and users can create do-not-track lists.

“We think it’s important to have people exercise judgement in making those lists,” Hachamovitch said. In addition to the feature, called Tracking Protection, Microsoft is organizing a roundtable of industry leaders with the University of California, Berkeley, to talk about web and browser privacy.

No browser can fully protect from one type of tracking, though: Flash cookies. The only way to stop Flash cookies is to turn off Flash for that specific website, an “extreme move” that many users won’t be willing to do in order to stop tracking.

WordPress.com Blogs Garnered 23 Billion Pageviews in 2010

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 03:37 PM PST

Automattic, the company behind popular blogging platform WordPress.com, reported 6 million new blogs and 23 billion pageviews for 2010. The latter figure represents a 53% increase from 2009.

These latest stats were reported by The Next Web, which added, “Media uploads also doubled to 94.5 terabytes of new photos and videos, while new posts were up 110% to 146 million” for the past year.

Just last month, Automattic founder Matt Mullenweg and CEO Toni Scheider disclosed that the company has around 30 million total publishers responsible for roughly 10% of all websites in the world. They also shared that WordPress.com receives 300 million unique visitors each month.

The five-year-old company may be experiencing remarkable growth, but it has yet to become a commercial success. The startup reportedly makes around $1 million per month from premium and hosting services, an inconsequential figure for a company that plays such a central role in web publishing.

Those who have always dreamed of getting their hands on some Angry Birds — literally — are in luck. Sort of. Mattel will be adapting the immensely popular Angry Birds mobile game into a board game.

Players will draw cards that show either brick structures or pigs — all of which are recreated as plastic figures — that tell the player where to direct a plastic angry bird with a slingshot.

Rovio’s smash hit app turned board game will cost $14.99, and will be available in May. The board game was revealed at CES 2011 this week. The video game version became available as a PlayStation mini for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable this week, and console versions will also eventually be available on PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

Verizon Schedules Press Event for Tuesday, Will It Announce the iPhone?

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 01:08 PM PST

Verizon Wireless is inviting the press to a special event on Tuesday morning in New York, hosted by president and COO Lowell McAdam. Could this be the long-awaited announcement of the Verizon iPhone?

That looks to be the case, at least according to All Things D’s sources. A Verizon iPhone announcement would be the culmination of years of speculation and anticipation.

In recent months, we’ve been privy to clues of the phone’s imminent arrival, and earlier this morning Boy Genius Report confirmed that Apple has blacked out employee vacation requests from February 3 to February 6. This news gives further credence to the notion that Tuesday will be the big reveal.

It is a bit peculiar, however, that Apple would let Verizon make the big announcement. Perhaps Steve Jobs will make a surprise appearance.

We’ll update this post when we know more about the event. Until then, let us know if you think Verizon will announce the Verizon iPhone on Tuesday.

Zynga Buys Social Web Browser Flock

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:56 PM PST

Rounding out a list of eight acquisitions in the past seven months, Zynga has purchased “social web browser” Flock.

Introduced in 2005, Flock incorporates Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn statuses via a sidebar and also boasts a link-sharing feature and a “Social Search” that displays what users’ friends are saying about a specific query. Flock’s team will now be integrated with Zynga’s in San Francisco. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Our team will help Zynga in achieving their goal of building the most fun, social games available to anyone, anytime — on any platform,” CEO Shawn Hardin wrote on the company’s blog this week. According to that post, Flock has more than 10 million users worldwide.

With the purchase, Zynga hopes to further the spread of its social media games. The company, which created FarmVille, Mafia Wars and CityVille, claims more than 215 million monthly active users. The purchase follows a string of seven acquisitions since May 2010, including XPD, Challenge Games, Unoh Games, Conduit Labs, Dextrose AG, Bonfire Studios and Newtoy.

Hulu Plus “Coming Soon” to Android

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:37 PM PST

Hulu Plus, the all-you-can-watch premium Hulu service, will soon become available on Android phones.

A Hulu Plus application for select Android devices running OS 2.2 (Froyo) will make its debut in a few months time, CEO Jason Kilar announced yesterday during Samsung’s press conference at CES. Kilar demoed the application running on a Samsung Galaxy S smartphone during the event.

Hulu Plus will also soon find its way to Vizio Blu-ray players.

Hulu Plus is already available on Roku, TiVo Premiere, iOS devices, consoles, select Internet-connected TVs and soon Boxee Box. The Android application, then, would seem a bit late to the party. The delay can likely be attributed to Hulu and Google butting heads over supporting Hulu Plus on Google TV, though the companies have since ironed out their differences.

In mid November, Hulu’s premium service exited preview stage and opened to all with a slightly lower price tag — $7.99 per month instead of $9.99 per month.

15+ Worthwhile Ways to Kill Some Time on Your Mobile

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:27 PM PST

There’s nothing wrong with being one of the 42 million people who have enjoyed launching virtual birds at virtual pigs when few other options for entertainment presented themselves.

But you have to admit that, especially with a resource like a smartphone in hand, there are probably better ways to spend your time. All that computing power, mobile Internet and flashy display can actually get something accomplished.

Start off 2011 right by putting away your Angry Birds (sometimes) and downloading some apps that could improve your life in addition to curing short bursts of boredom. Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Learn Something

iminds

You might not have time to read an entire book about the U.S. Federal Reserve, but for the sake of general knowledge, you should probably know at least something about it. Even if the Internet has reduced your attention span to nothing, there’s a good chance that eight minutes of audio or a 1,000-word briefing might even be enjoyable — especially if read by a professional actor with a pleasant accent. iMinds makes such tutorials for 400 subjects across a range of 12 main categories including history; mystery and conspiracy; politics, law and business; the arts; and science and nature.

Free iPhone and Android apps come with 12 “generalist” topics. Single topics range from about $1 to $2, and ambitious learners can buy “genius” and “know-it-all” packages for less than $30.

Finding other options for educating yourself when you’re in a rush or just waiting in line is just a matter of searching your app store. Free app Open Culture links you to daily blog posts, free audio books, free university courses, and other learning media. In a more frivolous mood? Teach yourself how to tie knots or make origami with currency.

When you think you’ve mastered a topic, test the theory using a quiz.

2. Volunteer

Give_Work

Forget excusing yourself from doing good under the pretense that you have no time. By microvolunteering, you can make some difference with bits of spare time throughout your day. The Extraordinaires is the most well known of the microvolunteering apps. Using the app, you can select the issues you’re interested in and the skills you have to contribute to them. You’ll be able to select from non-profit projects that align with your skills and interests and work on them when you have time.

Other apps you can use to put your free time to a good causes include Give Work, which supports marginalized people in Africa, South Asia, and Haiti, many of whom are in refugee camps. Essentially both you and a worker perform the same task for a company, but he or she gets paid for both of your time.

3. Reach Your Goals

Give_Work

The first step to accomplishing almost anything is deciding that you want to accomplish it. Instead of launching more birds during your next commute, take a couple of minutes to ponder your goals and how you would like to achieve them. Online goal-setting community 43things.com has an app component that syncs with your account so you can list new goals, indicate what percentage of each goal you have accomplished and write notes. If you log into the online version, you’ll be able to join communities of others who share your goals.

Opening The Habit Factor app every once in a while can help you build the habits that you are trying to create in your life. After setting some goals and deadlines, you can decide what habits would help achieve them.

Anybody who has read the back cover of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People knows that changing your habits can change your life. The Habit Factor is designed to manage the habits you are trying to create. If your main goal is to complete a marathon, for instance, then one of your habits might be to drink more water. When you drink your targeted amount, you can check that habit off your list for the day.

The app tracks what percentage of your habits you are maintaining, thus creating the occasion to celebrate (or mourn) your progress. Try tracking one goal first using the free Habit Factor Lite, which allows you up to three active habits, before springing for the full ($6.99) version.

4. Plan Your Meals

Give_Work

If your free time were money, then the adage would still apply: “A dime in time would save nine.” Take free moments to plan ahead and save yourself an emergency trip to the grocery store or a PB&J dinner later.

The free Dinner Spinner app puts the top-rated recipes and reviews from Allrecipes.com into a simple user interface. You can also search for recipes with filters like “low carbs” or “no dairy.” You can then save your favorites for later. For $2.99, the pro version gives you access to the site’s recipes, an online recipe box, a shopping list feature, and it allows you to search by ingredient. Shake the phone while in either version for a random suggestion.

Kraft’s iFood Assistant for BlackBerry, Android and iPhone is another option for finding recipes (though expect them to be crammed with Kraft products). You’ll collect a coupon from Kraft every now and then by using the app. Relish’s app is designed to help you plan a weekly menu but requires a paid subscription to the web site after a month free.

5. Learn Another Language

Give_Work

Although Rosetta Stone has yet to release an app, there are plenty of other language-learning apps out there that are vying for your free time. Mindsnacks, for instance, makes language lessons disguised as games. Currently it only has a Spanish version, but French, Italian, and Mandarin are on the way. Byki has more diverse language offerings, but takes more of a traditional flash card approach.

Which apps are you going to try out? Which looked the most interesting? Let us know in the comments below.

GetGlue and Showtime Collaborate on Checkin Deal

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:02 PM PST

Showtime GetGlue Promo

Entertainment checkin service GetGlue and cable network Showtime have struck up a first-time promotional deal that could earn fans some free DVDs.

GetGlue users will be able to check in to staple shows like Californication and newer series like Shameless and Episodes starting Sunday, January 9. Users who check in to the season while watching the shows live will be able to earn promotional stickers. Those with higher GetGlue activity — i.e. those users who check in to multiple episodes, like “Superfans” who check in to 10 —  will qualify to win free DVDs of that series’ particular season. Twenty fans per show will be eligible for these free DVDs; each show’s “number one” fan will also be rewarded with free DVDs. A drawing will be held after each program’s season is over.

This collaboration will continue through 2011 and will apply to other Showtime series like Dexter, which saw 100,000 fan checkins during its fifth season from September to December 2010.

GetGlue has also had partnerships with other big entertainment brands such as Fox, HBO and Warner Brothers. Founder and CEO Alex Iskold says it’s been pretty typical for fans to check in and receive stickers, sometimes bundled with discounts that could be applied to different places — like a particular store. But the Showtime DVD giveaways are a first for the social startup. He sees what his company does — with brands rewarding their fans — as something that will be a big trend in this new year.

“My view is that you need to have a set of interesting incentives for people to come over and check in… every part of the service is some kind of reward,” he says, referring to the ability to see what people are watching or the chance to receive stickers.

“Being able to get individual discounts or a reward of sorts, I think is even more powerful because it answers the question of ‘Why am I here?’” he says. “I think that this provides compelling reasons for people to stay with the service.”

A Paintbrush Stylus for the iPad [VIDEO]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:58 AM PST

Finger painting on the iPhone and iPod has become something of a phenomenon, thanks to apps like Brushes [iTunes link] and SketchBook Pro [iTunes link], and the work of high-profile artists like David Kassan, the New Yorker’s Jorge Colombo and David Hockney. In fact, Paris’s Pierre Berge-Yves St. Laurent Foundation is currently running an exhibition featuring Hockney’s iPad paintings until January 30.

But not everyone loves finger painting on the iPad. Like actual finger painting, it’s awkward and imprecise. Unfortunately, the current range of styluses for the iPad aren’t much help — instead of your finger, it feels like painting with a large, round eraser tip.

Which is why I was excited to discover Artists, a new kind of stylus that more closely resembles a paintbrush. It’s made with a long handle and soft bristles, which the creator, @nomadbrush, assures interested parties is “incredibly responsive.”

While it doesn’t look like the brush will necessarily provide the precision myself and others are looking for, it could very well prove more intuitive for artists used to traditional tools.

We’ll have a full review when the stylus comes out in February. Check out the video above in the meantime.

100+ Online Resources That Are Transforming Education

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:09 AM PST

grad image

Yury Lifshits is working on algorithms and prototypes of new services at Yahoo! Research. Before that he was teaching university courses in the U.S., Germany, Russia and Estonia. He blogs at yurylifshits.com and publishes his teaching materials at yury.name/teaching.

Education technology has become a busy space in recent years. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates continue to push the envelope with enormous philanthropic gifts toward education reform; Blackboard.com was traded at a $1 billion plus valuation; and Google is putting millions into education tech sites like KhanAcademy. At Mashable, you’ve read about social campaigns for education, gaming in education and free educational resources.

With so many startups on the scene, it is easy to get lost. Fortunately, most innovation is centered around a short list of fundamental ideas. In this post, we’ll walk through nine clusters of education tech companies.

1. New Institutions

2tor

The education system of the 20th century is built around institutions: schools, colleges, academies and universities. Naturally, many companies are aiming to recreate a degree-issuing institution. In this scenario, a startup has the highest level of control and the highest earnings per student. Online-based institutions have started from several niches (education for children with disabilities, advanced placement programs, test preparation) and are approaching mainstream education.

We’ve now seen the first online high schools (Keystone School), colleges (University of Phoenix, Kaplan University, The Open University, University of the People), certification programs (Alison.com), enterprise training programs (GlobalEnglish.com), art schools (AudioVisualAcademy.com) and test preparation programs (Top Test Prep, GrockIt, Knewton, RevolutionPrep, TutorJam, BrightStorm).

At the same time, brick-and-mortar institutions launch experimental online programs. iQAcademy helps high-schools to offer online classes, and 2tor and Altius Education do that for universities. Finally, there are innovative offline programs like YCombinator, Singularity University and Tetuan Valley.

2. Learning Management

brothers

To build a new educational institution, one needs to assemble a lot of pieces. Institutions are also hard to scale. That’s why many companies are opting for a different path: They focus on a single problem, create a software solution and sell it to schools.

Web-based tools are now used to manage applications, grades (Schoolbinder, LearnBoost), class ratings and reviews (Courserank, acquired by Chegg), schedules, tests, textbooks and student-teacher messaging. There is also a market for content management (Sakai Project, Moodle).

Another important area is analytics and reporting systems (SchoolNet.com). Learning management systems are present in every market: schools, universities, corporate education and training centers. Notable examples include Blackboard, Koofers, ePals, MyEdu.com, edu20.org and GlobalScholar. Solutions for corporate learning include LearningZen, Learn.com, Taleo.com, eLearning Brothers and Mindflash.

3. Online Content

chegg

For a long time, the market of educational content was controlled by book publishers. Technology is ready to disrupt that picture in several ways. Online video is set to take a share from text-based learning. Recommendation and search systems are offering new ways for content discovery. As in other forms of content, sales and subscriptions are moving to the web. TED.com, Big Think, 99 Percent, Pop!Tech, GEL Conference and the Charlie Rose show are notable for video recordings of technology and business leaders. Academic Earth, Videolectures.net, and ResearchChannel.org do the same for the science community. Salman Khan of KhanAcademy.org recorded more than 1,000 instructional videos covering almost all of the secondary school curriculum.

MIT OpenCourseWare and Stanford eCorner are leading examples of free online content from top universities. Tools for publishing (and charging for) online educational content include Faculte.com, uDemy.com, Videolla.com, LearnOutLoud and LeapingBrain.com. Youtube.EDU and iTunes U are general purpose content distribution hubs. OERCommons.org is a search engine for open-licensed content. Sites like About.com, HubPages, Instructibles, AssociatedContent and eHow collect practical advice on everyday topics.

Using the principles that power Wikipedia, everyone can now create their own wiki with platforms like PBWorks or Wikia.com. Wikified educational content can be found at Curriki.org, Wikiversity.org and Wikibooks. Content libraries are created for career inspiration (dailyendeavor.com, TryEngineering.org), high schools (neok12.com, aventalearning.com), case studies (StudyNet), and lecture notes (GradeGuru). Flat World Knowledge publishes free digital textbooks, while Chegg is a textbook rental service. InkLing is following the “iTunes for iPad-optimized digital book” model and adds social features to it. Rosetta Stone publishes interactive language courses on DVD.

4. Networks and Marketplaces

fortune

The web is an ideal tool to connect sellers and buyers in any market. Once you get a critical mass of initial users and investment in a brand, the network effect will keep you growing. The first marketplaces are already here, but the bigger fight lies ahead.

A number of sites (TeachStreet, BetterFly, School Of Everything, GuruVantage) offer tutor and training listings. TheoryAndPractice.ru is a very popular Russian language site for “edutainment” event announcements. CraftEdu.com is marketplace for paid/free online video and live training. Student Of Fortune is a marketplace for homework help. GulliverGo is a listing hub for educational travel. Noodle.org is your guide for choosing college. General purpose employment websites have sections for jobs for students and internship search. JobSpice.com helps students to create their online resume.

5. Live Training and Tutoring

supercool

As bandwidth improves, a number of startups are offering web-based live training. General purpose tools like Justin.tv, Ustream, and LiveStream can be used for streaming lectures and conferences. Supercoolschool and EduFire.com provide specialized live teaching tools. Myngle.com (languages) and TutorVista (high-school help) are tutor-student networks for live education. Sugata Mitra introduced the concept of “Granny in the Cloud” — senior volunteers who encourage kids to study using Skype video calls.

6. Learner Tools

school

For centuries, learning was based on classroom lectures and books. Can computers and mobile devices offer more engaging alternatives? Having a conversation with your teacher is much different when your classroom backchannel is powered by Twijector. Need to memorize something? QuizLet.com provides tools for fun flashcard-based learning. Commuting? There is a growing number of mobile learning apps including notes (StudyBlue, Widescript), law bar exam preparation (BarMax, costs $999), and driving test preparation (uHavePassed). Other tools include career orientation tests and educational games.

7. Collaborative Learning

edublogs

In traditional education, being a part of a campus community can offer as much value as the lessons themselves. It is no surprise that the community aspect is moving online too. Services like UnClasses.org and OpenStudy.com allow learners to form groups and study together. Quora.com and StackExchange are modern question and answering platforms for professional topics. There isa large number of education forums such as LiveMocha (language learning) and Edublogs.org (teacher community).

8. Funding and Payments

enzi

When it comes to financial resources, there are often a lot of questions and almost no answers. How do you keep college prices under control? How do you make education affordable? How do you increase salaries for the best teachers? How do you create more competition and less governmental control in education? Sites like Enzi.org and GradeFund help students get crowdfunded loans and sell shares of their future salaries. It is a good start, but much more innovation is needed.

9. Hardware for Education

computer

Specialized educational hardware for education can be a controversial topic. While some argue that education tech should rely on standard hardware, others see opportunity. One Laptop Per Child has produced and distributed almost 1.5 million inexpensive laptops optimized for students in developing countries. Kno is a new tablet computer hoping to be the “Kindle of textbooks.” Other notable computerized classroom solutions include TimeToKnow and SOLE project.

Mini to Take on Monster Truck in “3D Slow Motion” [VIDEO]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:46 AM PST

Mini is going to employ something called “3D slow motion” technology for an in-cinema ad that, absurdly, features a monster truck jumping four Minis.

The ad, created by Amsterdam-based ad agency BSUR, was shot at a packed Las Vegas stadium and features slow-motion footage of a crowd rising to its feet, dropping hotdogs, beverages and jaws to the floor in the process. There are also lots of slow-mo shots of the truck tires nearly grazing the roofs of the Minis amid an explosive barrage of pyrotechnics and a rock opera soundtrack.

The ad will appear in 90-, 60-, 30- and 20-second versions and will begin hitting theaters later this month. A 2-D version will also roll out for TV.

To build anticipation for the spot, Mini has released two teaser spots on YouTube. One (below) shows a muscular woman lifting a couch as she vacuums and then being visibly taken aback as she sees the spectacle on TV. Another features a Japanese family having a similar reaction.

Mini, which launched in the U.S. in March 2002, has frequently taken advantage of its somewhat offbeat image by using non-traditional media to try to maximize its marketing budget, which is small, by auto industry standards. In 2007, the brand launched a YouTube-based series called Hammer & Coop that satirized 1970s TV cop shows like Starsky & Hutch (and owed a debt of gratitude to the Beastie Boys’ iconic video for “Sabotage.”) That year, the brand also sent out RFID-enabled fobs to Mini owners which, when activated, transmitted personalized messages on Mini billboards.

FlickWalla Auto Posts Gowalla Photos to Flickr

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:00 AM PST

Inspired by developer Benny Wong’s FlickSquare mashup of Foursquare and Flickr, Naked Internet has released a similar application that lets Gowalla users automatically post their photos to Flickr.

The application, appropriately named FlickWalla, leverages Gowalla’s API to let users save their Gowalla photos on Flickr.

Getting started is a simple three-step process. First, grant FlickWalla permission to access your Gowalla Passport, then follow FlickWalla on Gowalla and finally give the application access to your Flickr account. Once completed, FlickWalla will post existing posts shared via Gowalla, and those posted thereafter, to Flickr with appended geodata and a link back to the original in the photo description area.

For now, FlickWalla fills a void and offers Gowalla users the opportunity to stash their photos elsewhere on the web. Realistically, FlickWalla, and its predecessor, will have limited lifespans as both Gowalla and Foursquare will likely add support for auto-posting to Flickr in the months ahead. Still, FlickWalla could help the small UK shop behind it get noticed, and perhaps that’s the team’s real motivation behind building the simple app.

Groupon Raises About Half of $950 Million [REPORT]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:38 AM PST

Groupon has raised $475 million of its $950 million funding, according to a report in All Things Digital.

The item, which cites “sources close to the situation,” notes that the investors include Russia’s DST Global, T. Rowe Price, Fidelity, Capital Group and Morgan Stanley. Reps from Groupon could not be reached for comment on the report.

The current investments value Groupon at $4.75 billion. Google had offered to buy the Chicago-based company for $6 billion, but Groupon turned that offer down in December, stating it preferred to remain independent. A December report by All Things Digital claimed that Groupon’s revenues were $2 billion.

Groupon filed for a Series G funding round in December that reportedly authorizes it to raise up to $950 million.

8 Tech Companies to Watch in 2011

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:14 AM PST

Grab your popcorn and Twizzlers, because 2011 is already shaping up to be an exciting year to watch startups and giants do battle for market share and big ideas. If you’re not sure which companies to look out for in the coming year, our writers and editors have submitted their expert picks below.

What do you think? Did we miss any promising tech companies (new or established) that you see making a big splash in 2011? We want — nay, demand — your forecasts in the comments below.

1. Minimal, Inc.

This Chicago-based design firm finished off 2010 by completing the most successful funding campaign in Kickstarter history. Its TikTok+LunaTik iPod Nano watch conversion kits raised more than $940,000 from more than 13,500 backers and garnered the kind of attention that should help launch this company to new heights in 2011. The gadget accessories market has a new player.

~ Josh Catone, Features Editor

2. StumbleUpon

OK, so StumbleUpon has been around since 2001, so it's not new to the scene. But with Digg's fall this year and StumbleUpon's planned release of premium features and publisher pages early this year, it has the potential to scale and be exposed to more users. And considering it's a big source of traffic for many news sites, it may start investing its time into figuring out how to leverage the site further and connect with its community on the site.

~ Vadim Lavrusik, Community Manager

3. Amimon, Inc.

This Israeli company has perfected its wireless HDTV system over the past years. Imagine plugging a tiny USB device into a laptop, and then displaying its output in full 1080p HD resolution on a monitor 100 feet away, with no lag. Amimon has already introduced one of its own products, but the big deal is the presence of its superior wireless HD standard (known as WHDI, or Wireless Home Digital Interface) chips built inside numerous other products, such as laptops, projectors, TVs and set-top boxes.

~ Charlie White, Senior Editor

4. Bloom Energy

If there is any company poised to revolutionize the energy market, it's Bloom Energy. The Bloom Energy Server (a.k.a. the "Bloom Box") changes inputs like natural gas or oil into clean, reusable energy. It's actually a dynamic fuel cell that creates energy through a chemical reaction. The company has raised more than $400 million to date and is testing its technology with Google, eBay, Wal-Mart and others.

~ Ben Parr, Co-Editor

5. Skype

Its recent outage notwithstanding, Skype has been on an impressive run since its breakup with eBay. Usage is at record levels, and features like group video chat and deep Facebook integration have reminded us that Skype is a top tier consumer and business web company. In 2011, the company is likely to go public, and with it, face a whole new level of scrutiny and expectations. Google will also continue to gun at Skype with enhancements to Google Voice (free U.S. calling for Gmail users through 2011 is an obvious sign of that), making the company all the more intriguing to watch.

~ Adam Ostrow, Editor-in-Chief

6. Tumblr

With $30 million in funding in its coffer and increasing content curation (not to mention 14 book deals born from its blogs), Tumblr could be shaping up into a much more organized — and ad-worthy — hub for entertainment. We’re interested to see if the company spends that money wisely — and how.

~ Brenna Ehrlich, News Editor

7. Clicker

The connected device ecosystem is still evolving, in large part because of the battle over control between content publishers, device makers and consumers. Clicker is managing to avoid the battle itself and is instead focusing on making it easy for users to find content, irrespective of what service that content might use. The company recently branched into recommendations and has mobile apps, supports Google TV and the Boxee Box and has a killer web app.

~ Christina Warren, Mobile & Apple Reporter

8. inDinero

<

inDinero is looking to replace much of what accountants do for small businesses, giving them a real-time financial overview of their company in the process. It changes how you track cash flows and expenses. It’s funded by Y Combinator and star angel investors and led by savvy entrepreneur Jessica Mah, who graduated from college when she was 19.

~ Ben Parr, Co-Editor

Futuristic Bubble Car Takes Us for a Ride at CES [VIDEO]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:41 AM PST

Ride along with us inside GM’s EN-V (Electric Networked Vehicle), a tiny two-seater with a 40-mile range that whisked us around a hotel ballroom in smooth, quiet comfort.

The little two-seater, employing the same balancing-act technology as the Segway scooter, sheds the two-wheeled scooter’s nerdy Mall Cop image for a Pac-Man-esque bubble design.

It was a hoot to take this egg-shaped hotrod for a spin inside a controlled environment, but we’re not quite sure how it would do on the mean streets of the real world — say, pitted against a giant SUV.

But so what? Maybe the future this precocious car occupies doesn’t include SUVs.

That said, it gets even more sci-fi: The EN-V has an autonomous mode, where you can sit back, texting and enjoying your morning coffee while its GPS-driven navi system takes care of the driving for you. Sounds great, but GM wasn’t demonstrating that feature to us quite yet. We’ll believe that when we see it.

Didn’t we already see a bubble car like this in a Woody Allen movie? Maybe so, but this cute conveyance is not available for sale yet — it’s a concept vehicle thus far — but it feels refined enough to hit the streets (or at least a golf course) before too long.
