Zuckerberg Appears on “SNL” Alongside His Cinematic Counterpart [VIDEO] Posted: 29 Jan 2011 11:20 PM PST Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a “surprise” appearance on Saturday Night Live, joking with the actor who played him in The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg. Viewers got a triple dose of Zuckerberg as Oscar nominee/guest host Eisenberg took the stage, quickly joined by the show’s Zuckerberg impersonator, Andy Samberg. Then, out walked Zuckerberg himself. When asked how he liked The Social Network, Zuck called it “interesting.” As the rumors we heard Friday suggested, the goal was to show Zuckerberg’s sense of humor, and he did an excellent job, appearing to have a great time in the spotlight at NBC’s Studio 8H in New York. Mark showed up three times on the show — a brief backstage bit with Executive Producer Lorne Michaels, the on-stage shtick with Eisenberg and Samberg you’ll see in the video below, and the obligatory SNL goodbye waltz, where Mark gave Eisenberg a seemingly heartfelt hug to show all was forgiven. Watch the clip for yourself and then let us know in the comments what you think. Plug Hub Makes That Mess of Cables Disappear [PICS] Posted: 29 Jan 2011 03:40 PM PST Time to get organized? Here’s the Plug Hub, innovatively designed to hide that rat’s nest of cables, wires and plugs underneath your desk. Run your power cords through one of the three holes in the top, then you can plug them into a power strip sitting on its shelf below. I especially like the way you can mount it on a wall or under the desk, where all of those power adapters and wires can be hidden away where people can’t see them unless they’re crawling on the floor. I’ve tried a similar organizer before, and while the Bluelounge Mini did the job of hiding away cables, it wasn’t as compact as the Plug Hub, nor could it be side-mounted to a desk, or possess a “cord anchor” inside where cables could be wrapped around. Now all this needs is a power strip with room for those huge “wall wart” power adapters, and it’ll tidy up the messiest part of my house. Why is this organizer so well designed? More than 568 people helped influence this product, according to Quirky, the site that uses crowdsourcing to develop products. If enough people preorder this $24 Plug Hub, it’ll actually be manufactured and shipped. Like that super snow scrapin’ Snowdozer we showed you the other day from Quirky, this one gets my vote. Plug HubIn the real world, you'd probably turn the box around the other way so you don't see the power strip. Plug HubYou can wrap your excess cable around the three reels inside. Plug HubNot a bad-looking design. Plug HubHere's the Plug Hub mounted under a desk. Wait, is that power strip defying gravity? The power strip can be attached through holes in the bottom. Plug HubSure looks better than a chaotic mass of tangled cables to me. More About: crowdsourced, design, organizer, Plug Hub, Quirky, trending For more Tech & Gadgets coverage:

HANDS ON: Garmin StreetPilot for iPhone [PICS & VIDEO] Posted: 29 Jan 2011 01:01 PM PST Garmin has finally created a navigation app for the iPhone, and now StreetPilot for iPhone is available in the App Store for $40. Here’s a review where we compare the iPhone version to another Garmin hardware GPS navigator, the Nuvi 1690. I’ve been using Garmin GPS navigation since the days when the hardware cost $800, and so I was interested in seeing if Garmin could translate the excellent user interface and responsiveness of its hardware navigation units to the iPhone. Delayed for years because of Garmin’s foray into its own smartphone hardware, the company’s done a respectable job of moving its software onto the iOS platform. A big plus with the software is its continuously updated maps, where small parts of the map software reside on the iPhone’s hard drive, but most are downloaded via the 3G network. This can be good and bad. While the maps are the freshest available, if you stray outside AT&T’s 3G network, you might not see a map until you get closer to a 3G tower. However, in my testing in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, this wasn’t a problem at all. Most of the features you’ll get on Garmin hardware units are there in the software, including extensive points of interest such as gas stations and restaurants, helpful lane assist capabilities, and spoken street names. In my testing, this iPhone version offered more information, and sooner than its hardware brandmate, a Garmin Nuvi 1690. In some cases, the iPhone version was slower, but as you can see in the video below, the speed difference was slight, and didn’t matter as much as the iPhone version’s useful tendency of offering additional street names in advance. On the left of the navigation screen, there’s a small iPod icon, and when you select it, you can pause your music, skip to the next song, and go to your iPhone’s music player to select different playlists and songs. Unfortunately, it’s not as friendly with Pandora Radio, where if you try to listen to Pandora music, as soon as the voice kicks in, Pandora is gone for good. Some users have complained about the sound quality of the voices in the iPhone StreetPilot, but that’s been improved with the recent update, although the sound quality of the voices is still not as good as that of the hardware versions. This seems like it would be an easy thing to fix, but in my testing, the voices were still clearly audible. You can hear the difference in the video below. Overall, Garmin has done an admirable job of bringing its elegant user interface to the iPhone. The software’s $40 price is reasonable, especially since it includes live updates of road conditions and the freshest possible maps. However, given the unpredictability of AT&T’s network, taking a long trip with its constantly updating maps might be a problem if you’re traveling through sparsely populated areas. In addition, I’d like to see better integration with Pandora, and higher-quality voices. To get an idea of Garmin StreetPilot for iPhone’s performance, take a look at this video where you can see which device won my informal and unscientific competition, and then don’t miss the gallery where I’ve made additional comments and observations. BlackBerry Service Restored in Cairo? [UPDATED] Posted: 29 Jan 2011 08:16 AM PST BlackBerrys are working again in Cairo according to NBC News, after two days of disconnection by the Egyptian government. In a live report last night (2:29 a.m. Cairo time) NBC correspondent Richard Engel held his BlackBerry up to the camera and said that service had been restored. Update: ABC News reporter Lara Setrakian tweeted 8 hours ago: “Cell phones coming back on line in Egypt, internet still seems to be out as of an hour ago.” It’s unclear whether BlackBerry service has been restored to the rest of the country, or if it’s still functioning now, but Engel said of the restoration of BlackBerry service and its effect on the widespread unrest in Egypt, “I don’t think that’s going to fundamentally change the equation, but it is showing responsiveness.” Engel said while BlackBerry service had been restored, he added, “I haven’t had a chance to check the Internet, but I assume that’s back on, too.” Meanwhile, the crisis is now into its fifth day. Top 10 Twitter Trends This Week [CHART] Posted: 29 Jan 2011 07:25 AM PST This week offers a mixed bag of Twitter trends, and the surprising absence of one item we thought would certainly make the list. As we’ve seen in the past, international sports usually drive a huge chunk of the Twitter discussion. This week’s number one trend was focused on a particular incident: the suspension of Scottish soccer commentator Andy Gray after he reportedly made sexist remarks off the air. A media frenzy, combined with plenty of public outcry, sent the story straight up to the number one slot. In the entertainment realm, Bieber and Gaga fought it out for the number two slot, with the boy wonder just edging out the fame monster. Bieber has a 3-D movie coming out soon, and Gaga has a new album on the way. Surprisingly, the State of the Union address, given by President Obama this past Tuesday, was nowhere to be found in the top 10, despite the onslaught of tweets during and after the speech. Our friends at What the Trend, who compiled the data below, told us that this topic peaked at around number 20. For the full list of top trends, check out the chart below. Because this is a topical list, hashtag memes and games have been omitted from the chart. You can check past Twitter trends in our Top Twitter Topics section, and read more about this past week's trends on What The Trend. Top Twitter Trends This Week: 1/22 – 1/28 |
