5 Online Communities to Help With Your Career

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 03:54 PM PDT

Sharlyn Lauby, SPHR, CPLP, is the HR Bartender, whose blog is a friendly place to discuss workplace issues. When not “bartending,” Sharlyn is president of Internal Talent Management, which specializes in leadership training and human resources consulting.

There's no denying that the world of work is evolving. Telework, productivity tools and our perceptions of work are changing the way organizations do business and treat their employees. Managing our own career options is not only important — it's a must.

Frequenting online career communities is one way to keep up to date on what's happening in the working world and how it impacts your career. Many of these communities post job openings, but that's not all they offer. The information and dialogue between community members can provide a valuable real-life perspective. Here are five career communities worth checking out.

1. LinkedIn

More than 90 million people around the world are using LinkedIn to connect with other business professionals. In the past, LinkedIn might have been viewed as just a site to list your professional qualifications or connect with former colleagues, but recent changes are encouraging a greater amount of dialogue.

Today, users can leverage their LinkedIn profile by showcasing their skills and expertise, adding a Twitter stream, feeding blog posts and being active in groups. By joining a group, you can interact with other professionals in your industry, geographic area, alumni network and other categories (see above). Groups can be a great way to understand trends in your profession, learn about the key skills in your industry and get the scoop on job openings.

2. Beyond.com

Beyond.com is the network for career communities. If you're wondering if there's a network in your geographic location or industry, Beyond.com is the place to look. There's a lot of information on this site, and if you're looking for a new career and want a comprehensive overview of a job, Beyond.com offers volumes of information in one location. For example, a search under industry will tell you Beyond.com has a technology channel with over 250 individual communities.

The technology channel also highlights companies that are hiring, technology schools, free IT publications, career videos and trends in the technology sector. As you dive deeper, one of those communities is GeekCareers.net, which offers job seeker tools in the areas of interviewing and self-assessment, in addition to a recruiting blog.

3. Monster's Career Advice Forums

Monster is one of the top websites both for job seekers and for companies who are looking for great people, and it has a global presence in nearly 50 countries, including China. Beyond job listings, Monster also offers resume writing services, a free salary wizard and a relocation data center.

The Monster Career Advice Forums are another useful feature of the site. The forums are divided into topic areas such as getting the job, career planning and industry insights. Forum users can ask questions and answer others. For example, one thread was about finding a job after being fired and how to explain it during an interview. Responses were candid and the forums appear to have some level of moderation, as there are not a lot of spam replies.

Monster highlights the most active forum conversations, so that you can read what people are saying even if you don't have a specific question. After all, another job seeker in the forum might bring up something you never even thought about.

4. Glassdoor

If you're interested in specific companies or you just landed an interview there, look them up on Glassdoor. Glassdoor is a community site where individuals can anonymously post the "inside scoop" on companies, jobs, salaries and benefits, based on their firsthand experiences. The comments answer the questions we're all dying to know: Does the company offer advancement opportunities? What's your impression of the management team? Does the company encourage in work-life balance?

In addition to learning the pros and cons of working at a given company, community members can gain insight to the company's recruiting process. For example, comments will tell you whether the recruiter asks behavioral interview questions or opts for a panel interview format — all helpful things to know as you prepare for an interview. Glassdoor also publishes aggregated salary data, if you’re interested in seeing such information.

5. BranchOut

BranchOut is a new career networking site that integrates with Facebook, so it’s very easy to set up. You can also import your LinkedIn profile, which eliminates the need to double-enter information. BranchOut allows you many of the same features as other career sites — you can search jobs and give recruiters the ability to search for your profile. If you like giving and receiving recommendations, BranchOut also offers the option of endorsements.

With more than 500 million people on Facebook, the stats are in your favor that someone you know (or are connected to) can help with career questions, information and recruiting. BranchOut could be an option for people trying to utilize Facebook in both a personal as well as professional way — just make sure your Facebook profile is well-maintained.

Online career communities are becoming more than just places to list jobs. They are growing into information repositories to help people with their entire careers. What other career communities are you participating in? Leave us your experience in the comments.

Security Flaw Found in Tumblr, Company Says It’s Now Fixed

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 02:41 PM PDT

It started with a tweet Saturday morning, sounding an alarm of a security breach in the popular microblogging platform Tumblr. “OMG… The Tumbeasts are spitting out passwords!,” it warned.

That tweet spread like wildfire, notifying the world of a coding error that opened a security hole with the potential of revealing users’ passwords, server IP addresses, API keys and personal information.

Fortunately, Tumbler reacted, fixing the problem and then issuing this official message about 5 to 6 hours after the flaw was discovered:

“A human error caused some sensitive server configuration information to be exposed this morning. Our technicians took immediate measures to protect from any issues that may come as a result.

We're triple checking everything and bringing in outside auditors to confirm, but we have no reason to believe that anything was compromised. We're certain that none of your personal information (passwords, etc.) was exposed, and your blog is backed up and safe as always. This was an embarrassing error, but something we were prepared for.

The fact that this occurred at all is still unacceptable, and we'll be seriously evaluating and adjusting our processes to ensure an error like this can never happen again.

Please let us know if you have absolutely any questions.”

What caused the error? That’s still under intense discussion at The Hacker News and elsewhere in the hacker community, but many think the culprit was a errant piece of PHP code. Obviously, spelling counts.

Let us know in the comments if you think those who discovered the security flaw were more eager to broadcast its existence than notify the Tumbler coders who might have been in a position to quickly fix it.

Top 100 Socially Networked Cities in the U.S.

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 01:16 PM PDT

Anyone who wants to rank socially networked cities is going to be in for a fight. But the brave souls at Men’sHealth aren’t shying away from a tussle, placing the top 100 most socially networked cities in order for all to see.

How did they do it? It appears to be a fair and scientifically valid procedure. First, Men’sHealth figured out each city’s LinkedIn and Facebook users per capita, and then tapped the NetProspex marketing database to figure out each location’s amount of overall Twitter usage.

Not stopping there, the next step was to consult online ad network Chitika to quantify traffic from MySpace, Friendster, Reddit and Digg, and finally, SimplyMap helped determine the percentage of households using chat rooms and blogs.

The list below is as much a study of how to find this information as it is a valid assessment of which city has the bragging rights to calling itself The Capital of Social Networking. Speaking of capital, who knew our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., would be at the top of the list, or that Milwaukee (#45), the location of Mashable’s humble Midwest Test Facility, would rate higher than the mighty New York City (#53), home of Mashable HQ?

See how your city ranks, and feel free to trash-talk those other lesser bergs in the comments.

Review: Phosphor Reveal Watch Rotates Tiny Crystals to Tell Time [VIDEO & PICS]

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 10:53 AM PDT

You’ve probably never seen a mechanical digital watch before, and certainly nothing like this: It’s the Phosphor Reveal, using an array of rotating Swarovski plastic crystals to display the time.

This $199 piece of wrist technology works like a sign in a train station, flipping individual dots to display numerals. Phosphor, a company that’s also adept at manufacturing E-Ink watches, calls this proprietary tech “Micro-Magnetic Mechanical Digital (M3D),” using an electromagnetic pulse to change the position of those crystals on the face of the watch. Here’s how it works:

It’s a technological marvel, but it’s not exactly practical. The watch is over a half-inch thick, and it feels unusually heavy at 2.8 ounces. As I mention in the video below, this model with the black band and bezel is meant for men, but its flashy Swarovski crystals might not result in a masculine effect.

However, as you can see in the gallery, there’s a variety of styles for women, too, with pink, red and white bands and crystals around the bezel as well, ranging in price up to $249.

Watch the video, and you’ll see and hear the Phosphor Reveal in action, making its little fluttering noise as the numerals change. If the noise bothers you, you can push one of the side buttons and the numerals disappear, silenced for 12 hours but keeping time nonetheless.

At first, I found its sounds distracting, wondering if there was a mouse in the room, but once I got used to it, I found its little fluttering noise quite charming. I’m not sure if I would want to live with that from now on, though.

Whether the style of the Phosphor Reveal fits your personal taste is up to you, but I’m astonished that such technology can even exist. Imagine the miniaturization that had to take place for this device to fit on your wrist. Granted, this is not a tiny or thin watch, but its unusual nature might impress someone at a cocktail party.

Top 10 Twitter Trends This Week [CHART]

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 07:37 AM PDT

Twitter Chart Image

As expected, the devastation in Japan from last week’s earthquake and tsunami captured the thoughts of Twitter users from around the world, and an outpouring of sentiment (which included the popular hashtag #PrayForJapan), made this topic number one. If you’d like to make a donation to the relief efforts in Japan, which are still underway, here are some options:

Meanwhile, in Orange Country, California, a pop singing sensation was in the making. 13-year-old Rebecca Black, whose parents paid about $2,000 to the label Ark Music Factory to produce a song and music video, has had the entire Internet captivated for days. Following the tweeted discovery of the video by comedians Michael J. Nelson and Daniel Tosh, and the subsequent blogosphere frenzy, Black’s name has rarely left the trending topics list since last Friday, and lands at number two on this week’s chart. Speculation persists about what made this catchy pop tune such a viral powerhouse. The song is face-meltingly bad.

Soccer, no surprise, continues to trend strongly, and rounds out the top three topics this week.

For the full list of top trends, check out the chart below, compiled by our friends at What the Trend. Because this is a topical list, hashtag memes and games have been omitted from the chart.

You can check past Twitter trends in our Top Twitter Topics section, and read more about this past week's trends on What The Trend.
