Tweet Viewer Worm Crawling Around Twitter [WARNING]

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 03:33 PM PST

Be careful what you click on when you’re using Twitter, because there is a “Tweet Viewer” worm afoot.

Under the guise of revealing who’s been visiting your Twitter profile, when you click on its link it asks for your Twitter authorization, and then tweets that same message to more unsuspecting users.

Keep in mind that merely clicking on the link is not going to automatically authorize anything — that only happens if you click the Authorize button after clicking the link. So, like many viruses, worms and scams, you have to actively give it to yourself, rather than having it attack you as you stand by innocently.

The worm appears like this (notice the tweetviewer link):

What to do if you’ve been caught up in this? It’s easy enough to go to Settings/Connection/Revoke Access, and then you’re free of it. Here’s the help page if you need more info. And now, link shortener Bit.ly has stopped the unpleasantness for now by blocking domains hosting those scam links. However, if the app you’re using to access Twitter still has permission to do so, it could keep spreading this nuisance with a different shortened link.

The burning question now: Why? According to TechCrunch, “It’s not clear that it’s doing anything behind the scenes.” So all morning, it was spreading like wildfire, at the rate of about 159 tweets per minute, just because it could.

Angry Birds Game Coming to Facebook

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 01:26 PM PST

Rovio CEO Mikael Hed says the immensely popular Angry Birds game is coming to Facebook next month with “completely new aspects to it that just haven’t been experienced in any other platform.”

According to All Facebook, Hed used the word “collaborative” to describe aspects of the game, adding that “the pigs will have a more prominent role.”

Take a look at the Angry Birds page on Facebook, and you’ll see that something is up. If you “like” the page, Rovio promises to keep you posted on all the latest news about the upcoming Angry Birds migration to Facebook.

Other game developers must be envious of the meteoric rise of Angry Birds. First it starts out as an iPhone game, then it’s ported to Android, Palm and Nokia, then suddenly there are multiple versions of the game, and it’s showing up on PCs, PSP/PS3, Windows 7 Phone, there’s a movie tie-in, an animated series, and there’s even a 3D version in the works. And next month we’ll be playing it on the largest social network in the world.

Please tell us in the comments how you think Angry Birds will do on Facebook, and what you think that collaborative aspect of the game might be.

HANDS ON: Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard Made For iPhone, iPad [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 12:38 PM PST

Here’s a foldable portable keyboard from Verbatim that’s specifically designed for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. How well does it work, and what must be sacrificed for this amount of portability?

I took this little Verbatim Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard out of its swanky leather case, and with the push of a button, it opened with a satisfying click. Locking the keyboard into a flat position with a sliding tab, soon it was paired up with my iPhone 4 without incident.

Sliding out the built-in stand for the iPhone (the stand’s too small for an iPad), I first tried propping the phone onto it in a vertical position. No dice. The iPhone was too top-heavy for that, and constantly slipped off its perch. Moving the phone to the horizontal position, it stayed put, and made more sense for typing documents, anyway.

Looking at the keyboard, it reminds me of the old favorite Palm 3245WW folding Bluetooth keyboard that some people still like so much they’re willing to pay upwards of $200 for it. But this Verbatim model goes one step further with a feature that differentiates it from all others: its transport controls let you tend to your music on iPod, iPad or iPhone. It even works with Pandora Radio. You can start/pause, skip to the next or previous track, and control volume from the bank of buttons along the left side. This proved to be a handy feature indeed.

The keyboard’s typing action is like most laptop keyboards — rather shallow, but still usable. Touch typists might not like the varied size of the keys, where, for example, the “G” key is slightly smaller, while on the other hand, the “V” key is larger. It’s also strange to have two small space bars, but I got used to it quickly. Still, you’ll have to make slight compromises for this portability.

Its Bluetooth capability works with other mobile phones, but it really shines with Apple devices, with its full set of keyboard shortcuts that worked well with my iPhone.

Although this keyboard is slightly larger than some other portable keyboards, I think it’s a solid piece of kit for those who need portability and would rather type on physical keys than an on-screen keyboard.

So what must be sacrificed? Very little, unless you can’t get used to the varied size of the keys, which I found easy to do. The one sticking point for me was its offputting $104 price on the Verbatim website. For that price, it’s not worth it, but then I was relieved to find it for $53 on Amazon. For that, it’s a good deal, deserving of a place in your carry-on bag.

Take a look at the Verbatim keyboard in action in the video above, and get some close-up looks in the gallery below:

Dog: Man’s Best Facebook Friend, Too? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 09:13 AM PST

Okay dog-loving Facebook users, have we got an infographic for you. You did realize that people are setting up Facebook and Twitter accounts for their dogs, didn’t you?

Apparently our infographic-creating friends at Lab 42 were startled when they got a friend request from a suspiciously single-named individual who wasn’t a famous rockstar. With a little digging they discovered they were being befriended by Man’s Best Friend.

Aha! This could be fodder for an infographic, they said. And so the survey began, taking place online via social networks between February 28 and March 2, 2011 among 407 adults with even distribution across age groups and income levels, aiming to explore the relationship between Facebook, dogs, and those who love them.

6 Successful SXSW Startup Launch Stories

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 07:24 AM PST

As part of this year’s SXSWi, Mashable presents the Mashable SXSWi House, featuring private events, open houses, meet-and-greet opportunities and two nights of parties. Learn more here and register for public events on Eventbrite.

Startups vie for a chance to be part of the SXSW Accelerator competition for the opportunity it brings — 41% of the companies that have participated in the first two competitions received funding after the event. Only 40 companies are selected, but that doesn’t mean your startup can’t make a splash in Austin. Just being at SXSWi and exposing a solid product to the conference’s 14,000 attendees and a 1,500-person-strong media swarm can ignite a business.

But it can’t be engineered with snazzy swag and marketing dollars — you have to have great credibility and a great product.

“As a marketer, I’m happy to call out other marketers who think that SXSW launch success can be engineered or bought — it has to instead be earned with so much elbow grease and good will,” explains Josh Jones-Dilworth, who has worked on SXSW’s PR and serves on the SXSW Accelerator advisory board. “If anything, SXSW-goers are marketing-averse, super-savvy and able to triage credibility (or lack thereof) with a sniff.”

Without further ado, here are five companies (and an author) that have effectively leveraged the multi-industry conference into a launchpad for their success.

1. Twitter

Although Twitter is the company most-often cited in lists of successful SXSW launches, it actually launched nine months prior to its debut at SXSW 2007. “Contrary to common belief, we didn’t actually launch Twitter at SXSW — SXSW just chose to blow it up,” wrote Twitter co-founder Evan Williams in a Quora response to the question, “What is the process involved in launching a startup at SXSW?”

The conference did, however, help the micro-blogging platform gain momentum.

According to Williams, Twitter paid $11,000 to put a visualization of the service on flat-panel screens in the hallways (“We knew hallways were where the action was,” he says), and created an event-specific feature that allowed attendees to text a message in order to sign up automatically and follow a handful of “ambassadors” at SXSW.

2. Foursquare

Foursquare is another of the most well-known SXSW launches — but unlike Twitter, the location-based service actually did launch at the event. “We started building Foursquare in late 2008, but we really kicked things into gear in early 2009 so we’d have something ready to launch at SXSW — it gave us a deadline to shoot for,” says co-founder Naveen Selvadurai. “We weren’t sure if people were going to embrace us or laugh us out of the room for features like badges and mayorships, but everyone in Austin really seemed to get it.”

The startup raised its first round of funding six months after its SXSW launch.

3. PhoneBooth Free

Phonebooth sent a team of 11 and shipped five phone booths to SXSW 2010 for the launch of its free small business calling service, Phonebooth Free. “The booth itself drove hundreds of people to sign up for Phonebooth Free on the spot, and they told their friends about the product, too,” says Phonebooth Senior Vice President and General Manager Jim Mulcahy. “The launch at SXSW got us several thousand users within the first two days and a ton of visibility with press and influencers. By the end of March, we were still seeing the effects of the SXSW launch on new-user acquisition.”

4. GameSalad

game_salad

Free game creation tool GameSalad participated in the SXSW Accelerator in 2009. At the time, it had just five employees and was searching for funding to expand.

The Accelerator, which is sponsored by Microsoft Bizspark, is a two-day competition in which selected startups pitch to a panel of VC and angel investor judges for a grand prize of a “most innovative” title. But it’s more than that.

“The night before the Accelerator presentation, all participants were invited to an event called Tech Cocktail, where Accelerator startups were given the opportunity to mix and mingle with the very same VCs and angel investors they would be pitching to 24 hours later,” says Jonathan Hunt, GameSalad’s director of communications. “Within one hour, GameSalad had secured its first investment check.”

Hunt attributes more than $1 million in investments over the next five months directly to the Accelerator contest. Since then, the company has tripled in size, and more than 2% of the games currently available on the Apple App Store were built on its platform.

5. Foodspotting

Foodspotting was a finalist in the 2010 SXSW Accelerator. The company, which makes it easy for foodies to share photos of dished, launched its iPhone app just before the event. It is taking the same approach this year with its Android app.

“We found that the most important thing for us was being present at SXSW and having people see our “I Camera Food” t-shirts — gaining that brand awareness and exposure is key,” says Fiona Tang, Foodspotting’s Community Lead.

6. Tim Ferriss

tim_ferriss

Author Tim Ferriss gave a presentation about his first book, The Four-Hour Workweek at SXSW 2007 in an overflow room that could seat a mere 100 people. But that talk, combined with some minor marketing efforts, was enough to launch his career.

“If I had not gone to SXSW, I almost definitively can say that I would not have been able to build the writing career that I did, nor the startup, investing and advising career that I did,” he says. “I really view that first SXSW as a pivotal inflection point for me.”

Ferriss says size doesn’t matter when it comes to audience. What matters is that you talk with the right people and make a strong impact on those people — which he did for his 100-person crowd.

“If you hit the right 100 people at SXSW with Twitter and so forth, you can effectively hit everyone there if you have a strong impression,” he says.
